The Best French Learning Apps for Your IPhone/IPad Load Your Iphone/IPad with These French Learning Apps ChaptersIPhone or IPad? Or Both?Apps for your Language Learning PleasureThe Best Way to Learn a New LanguageLately, there has been a lot of noise made about people constantly, obstinately working their mobile: in traffic, on the bus, on the tube...We could hardly dispute the research â" after all, such groups have vast resources to expend on gleaning and analysing information. However, what if all of that time people devote to their screens is a means to an end? What if people fixated on their phones are actually doing something productive, like learning a language?Of all the downloaded applications from the Apple store, educational apps â" including language learning tools, come in third on the list of most downloaded, behind business and games.By comparison, social networking and shopping apps rank 17th and 20th, respectively. Perhaps all of the blather about hanging on social media is inaccurate? You surely know that there is a wealth of language learning websites and applications for learning on the go; some you have to pay for and some that are completely free. And some that you can use for free, only to an extent. If you want the good content, you have to pay. Here now, an interesting side note...While conducting our own, decidedly unscientific research on which French learning apps are best, we found plenty of websites that had top ten lists on the topic, but none of those lists matched up!And some did not even feature the same apps.So we render onto you our own list of best IPhone and IPad apps to learn French with, compiled by exhaustive trials, and ranked by their comparative merits.IPads have better graphic resolution and are more adaptable for games Source: Pixabay Credit: FirmBeeYou can sync your devices so that you have the same applications on one as you do the other.Different:While you can make phone calls with your IPad over wireless networks by using an app, only the IPhone can use cellular networks to make calls.Because of the bigger screen on the Pad, apps have more versatility and higher resolution graphics than on the smaller phone screensAny IPad can operate any application meant for either the pad or the phone, but the IPhone can only operate apps meant for the smaller sized device.Should you use a phone application on your Pad, you will likely find that the graphics are distorted and won't necessarily work right. These distinctions are relevant to our topic. In fact, app designers usually create twin apps; one for each device. If you are the proud owner of both, you are most likely aware of these divergences. For anyone contemplating investment into Apple products, hopefully this breakdown will give you food for thought. Now, on with the list of apps for optimal French language learning experience!Apps for your Language Learning PleasureIn 24 Hours Learn to Speak FrenchWould you believe that you can start learning a foreign language within such a short time frame?According to testimony from any language learner currentl y using the app, it works well by itself or in conjunction with other tools to learn French.Enroling in a language course takes time and money; commodities that can be in short supply â" especially time. Not so with 24 Hours! Its audio feature permits you to learn on the go by playing recorded words and phrases, first in English, and then in French. If you have occasion to focus on your screen as you listen, all the better: what you see will be what you hear. The best features of this app are: emphasis on conversational phrases, spoken by a native speaker.Downsides: no repeat function, and the lessons will not continue automatically. Once you've finished a lesson, you must manually engage the next learning unit. You may sync your devices so that you will have the same applications on both Source: Pixabay Credit: Rani_RamliLearn French Vocabulary and Grammar with BusuuUsed by over 80 million language learners worldwide, this app has won awards for its ease of use and breadth of language instruction. As a member of this learning community, you will be guided by native speakers toward proper pronunciation of words and how to say frequently used phrases. You can challenge your language acquisition by taking quizzes, built right into the app!Even better: the software developers have recently added a progress bar so that you can track your learning and gain a fluency score. And, as you learn new language, you can help others learn your native language because Busuu works as a language exchange platform! We've found two downsides to this app:You would have to pay for more in-depth lessons once you've mastered the language instruction that is available for free. For some reason, downloaded lessons have trouble staying downloaded. Some users even report that the app is not available for use offline.Nevertheless, you could gain a lot of language skills with this app.Learn Play Languages BeginnerFor some people, learning is most effective when it is fun! This app combines audio and visual, along with games to help you learn language faster. One of its best features is that it teaches by word grouping. For example, you will learn all of the basic words for greetings at once. You can then make flashcards of them before you play the app's games, or note them in your phrasebook, if you so choose.Trying to teach yourself a second language is never an easy prospect, especially if there is no external motivation, such as an upcoming holiday or learning French for business. That is why this software strives to make studying feel more like playing!Their quick-start programme is free, but more in-depth learning will require a small fee. However, you can use this app on- or offline, and it even doubles as a translator! If you're looking for a good French English translator, click here!In keeping with the fun theme, allow us to introduce...Learn French with MindsnacksAs language courses go, this one rates high for its engaging games and challenging quizzes. While it doesn 't get heavily into verb conjugation, you will certainly find listening to each new phrase, and the activities that go with it, stimulating. You will of course have the opportunity to memorize verbs and their endings, but you won't have entire sessions that focus exclusively on such repetition.Perhaps the best part of this app is that you can challenge your friends through its family sharing feature! If we could think of language learning apps as cars for just a moment, the last two applications might be comparable to a Mini â" kicky and fun to drive. Others are more like Land Rovers: a bit bulky, but useful nonetheless. When it comes to the following one, it might be considered the Rolls Royce of language lessons via app.Memrise Language LearningThis language learning software has games, ways to practice your speaking and plenty of new words on the ever-ubiquitous flashcard â" a lot like the other featured systems. What Memrise has that the others don't is videos: thousands of videos of native speakers â" not teachers!, introducing and drilling on new vocab. They even take you through the learning materials you're about to study. And that's not all!You have chat bots, you have object recognition: snap a picture and the app will store it, along with the name of what you've captured, for you to refer to any time you want!Learning a new language has never been more technical... or more versatile. You may download two or more French learning apps to your IPad Source: Pixabay Credit: FirmbeeHonourable Mention ApplicationsEach of the apps highlighted here brings a new dimension to learning languages. Yet, we've barely scratched the surface of utilities available for learning languages! Now, we mention a few that you may already know:Duolingo â" a free language learning platform that includes a proficiency assessmentBabbel: a subscription-based app and e-learning platformRosetta Stone â" more than a quarter-century of experience in how to learn a languageRocket French was voted the best quality, most comprehensive audio programmeWhen I was looking for French lessons, Superprof found me several great tutors. I started learning in no time! The Best Way to Learn a New LanguageSome believe that quality, effective learning can only be had in a classroom, with a certified teacher.Others are not fond of classrooms and would never sit in one again if they didn't have to.Far be it from anyone to presume what your learning preferences are, but you may find value in this tip:Make use of free trials to discover the right app for your learning process. You may realise that using two apps â" a fun one and a more traditional-style approach will make you bilingual faster. And what if you don't have two Apple devices?Every app to learn a foreign language featured in this article is formatted for either IPhone or IPad; you simply choose which platform you will download to.Read about learning French online.

One Easy Way to Enhance Your Voice Lessons
One Easy Way to Enhance Your Voice Lessons Suzy S. Want to really improve your singing? Truly owning your voice and making the most of your lessons requires more than just learning the lyrics and following your teachers direction. Read on for some great advice from Denver voice teacher Ruth C., and start approaching your singing from a whole new perspective Unlike other instruments, the voice is inside the body, which can make it a very frustrating instrument to understand! Scientists have done tons of studies to better understand how your two little vocal folds work when breath passes through them â" but when youâre actually in the middle of your voice lesson, how can you understand whatâs going on? The goal of lessons should always be to find your voice (not to mimic your favorite recording artist or your teacher). The best possible way to make sure you understand what your teacher is having you do is to ask tons of questions. It may feel silly to ask some basic questions, but I guarantee your teacher will love answering them! If it helps you to understand some of the anatomy/science of singing, ask for a full explanation from your teacher. Teachers may use a variety of terms for the same idea (breath support, diaphragmatic breathing, etc. â" which all refer to the same thing), so make sure you and your teacher are on the same page. Or if you work better with images (âsinging with an even flow of air feels like ice skatingâ), make sure you and your teacher remember a few key ones to use in your lessons. Knowing the terms is one thing. Feeling and being able to describe them as they happen in your body and voice is another. Make sure you can identify how it feels to sing with good breath support. Does your rib cage expand? Does your stomach expand or contract as you sing? Do you run out of breath before the end of the phrase? These are all questions to ask yourself and your teacher as you are working in your lesson. The practice of defining terms and seeing how they act in your voice will give you the best knowledge of all how to practice and sing successfully when your teacher isnât there! When youâre at home working on a song, can you feel the same flow of air, or relaxation in your jaw? If not, then ask yourself how your teacher got you to find these qualities in your lesson. (Having a recording of your lessons can help with this when your memory fails!) Learning to sing is not always easy, but practicing this kind of âSocratic Questioningâ during your lessons will help you continue your improvement in between them. When you have a better understanding of what really happened in those lessons, you can take that knowledge with you for the rest of your life! Want even more expert advice from our teachers? How to Set Your Rates as an Art Tutor
How to Set Your Rates as an Art Tutor How Much Should You Charge As An Art Tutor? ChaptersWhat is Art?Offering a Fair Price for a Drawing Course Depending on the Level of the StudentChoose your Rates for your Drawing Course according to your DegreesOffering an All Inclusive Rate for a Drawing Course Including the MaterialWhat are the Packages of Drawing or Painting Courses? How to Bundle Art Classes into PackagesFinding the best price to offer private drawing lessons is not an exact science. For one, even though many seek out tutoring companies to lend help with homework or provide supplemental instruction, doing so is still considered private tutoring - even though those one on one sessions may occur in a fairly crowded office or even in a group.Clients who engage the services of a tutoring center understandably pay higher fees to cover, among other things, study materials and office overhead. That means that, while hopeful parents may pay up to £50 per session for a math tutor or an English tutor, the one actually giving help with grammar or maths might only re ceive £20.It is thus understandable that you, like so many others, would prefer to be an independent tutor. We should bear in mind that most tutoring centers tutor in academic subjects, homework help and test prep. But you are not an algebra tutor, a reading tutor, a chemistry tutor or even a French tutor, nor do you help any students sharpen their study skills. And, while nobody is saying you are not qualified to conduct one on one tutoring in math and science, the discipline you are really passionate about is art - you are someone who strives to make our world a more beautiful place and teaches others how to do so as well. That adds a new dimension to your establishment in the tutoring business, the main one being that your discipline is more specialized, with a smaller potential for students academically motivated to succeed in mastering the knowledge necessary to write a college essay that will earn them high marks. Many enthusiastic art patrons seek art classes as an enrich ment activity rather than to succeed in gaining entrance to the art school of their dreams. That is why it's necessary to take into account several parameters so you get paid fairly while your students get a learning environment tailored to their artistic aspirations.Where will the painting or drawing workshops take place - will you travel to their homes, invite them to your studio or embrace modern teaching strategies and become an online tutor?Would you have to take your students' learning style into consideration, as a reading and writing tutor or one who teaches calculus might? Is the artistic material supplied (paper, paint, brushes, felt, etc.) for the drawing course? And would those materials work for kindergarten students as well as those enroled in universities? In what purpose are these courses or internships of plastic arts given? So many questions to ask as you become a tutor! One of the most difficult is how to set a price for private lessons of a fairly remunerative and at tractive drawing course for the professional or the enthusiast who delivers it.Another pertinent one being... Clearly, becoming a tutor of art has wide-ranging possibilities!Yet, through all of the art - traditional, modern and done in these varieties of media, most people persist in thinking of art solely as painting and drawing. What type of art do you practice? What is your medium? Do you think tutoring future graphics artists should cost more because of the level of technical skill involved, or should teaching painting yield more per hour because it is more sought after? It is these types of questions that are at the heart of the discussion about setting rates for art tuition. Before we can guide you in setting fair rates for your art classes, we have to know what the art in question is.Are you teaching art as therapy, maybe to youths or the elderly? In this instance, technique would be less important than expression.Or, perhaps you've elected to take on the growing population of a dults who seek art classes in order to achieve a more satisfying work life balance. Here you would need to expound a bit on technique, as well as critique and possibly correct your students' work. Might you look exclusively to tutor art students already enroled in a degree programme at university? With this calibre of student, you would have to be at your technical best, reinforcing theory as well as demonstrating the strokes and colour blending that will yield flawless works. Whatever your medium, whomever your students and no matter whether you make use of today's modern drawing tools - a Wacom tablet and your favourite software, we now discuss how to set your prices for tutoring in art.Offering a Fair Price for a Drawing Course Depending on the Level of the StudentDepending if the art teacher leads a private lesson for a child in leisure or for a preparation for an entrance examination in a school of art, the rate will be different. Quite logically, the price of a painting wo rkshop or drawing can vary from the simple to the double, let's say from £20 to £40 per hour.Indeed, the required technical level will not be the same, just like the personal involvement of the teacher, which can become a professor as well as a personal coach. But we can also wish to learn to draw for our own pleasure as can be seen here. The approach to always keep in mind is that of the win-win. It's a fact that the drawing or painting teacher loves art, but he offers classes to earn money.Namely that if the professor is self-employed to declare their hours of private drawing courses, they will have to put back a contribution of about 25%.For example, he can propose painting classes in their own residence for £20 an hour, asking the student to bring his material. Once the contributions are paid to the National Insurance Contributions Office, he will keep only approximately £15.In addition, if he supplies all the material from the paper to the eraser, you can quickly imagine t hat giving drawing courses is not very lucrativeâ¦Of course, if a student asks for an intensive preparation, hoping to enter Newcastle University or the University of Oxford, for example, he will have to dig into his pockets. Now let us imagine you will host landscape watercolour painting courses for adult beginners, or host a street photography session. Here, you will have to consider whether you would take your student(s) into the field to actually view the landscape or street in question, along with whether you will provide the watercolours and the canvas - if that is your choice. You might even furnish the digital cameras... For these lessons, you would have to consider the cost of everything, from travelling to the price of the canvas - unless you request that your student furnish materials (or camera) him/herself.And you will have to find students for your classes, too...You would also have to figure that going into the field would take a significant block of time, meaning t hat there would not be any other sessions on your schedule while you are away.By contrast, a still life or portrait photography can be executed in a studio, so naturally you would not need to incorporate travel costs into your fee. Furthermore, you could limit class time to an hour or an hour and a half, meaning you may plan for more sessions on that day. What about a life drawing? If your art tutoring services include drawing and painting a live model, you would have to factor the hourly cost of the model into your class rates. In such cases, the best tutors generally advertise the extra cost when they announce the class. You'll note that, in a lot of these instances, group sessions would be more feasible - imagine taking a lone art student into the field for a photography or landscape painting session! That is because, in most cases, teaching art in classes is more practical than individual instruction. As such, setting rates for a small group is easier done than for a lone art stud ent who requests home tutoring or online tutoring on a weekly basis.Anyone looking for a private tutor to learn art would most likely have something at stake: good marks in their art classes perhaps, or knowing art history in order to pass a college entrance exam.If such individualized tutoring sessions are geared more toward a type of academic tutoring, you may set your rates competitively with other tutoring programs that help students achieve academic success!Find out what qualifications you need to become a private art instructor...Become a painter of watercolours by following private painting lessons! Photo via VisualHuntbecome an art instructor? And if you really want to learn to make attractive watercolours and the professor is an expert in acrylic paint, that's not necessarily the right person. This is why it's always better to test a first drawing course before making a commitment on the duration for a fixed package of 5 or 10 courses for example. This is good for the tea cher as for the student!SuperProf allows art teachers and amateur painting and plastic arts students to simply enter into a relationship. The best of the site: art professors profiles are ultra complete to make a good choice. If the professor goes to the student's home, they can charge, of course, a compensation for the kilometres expenses. For example, if the course is 15 kilometres away from the place of residence of the teacher, he can ask for a stake at the level of £3 per course.Learn the best ways to find students for your art courses! The technique of the knife, an extra hand to take in a painting workshop! Photo credit: Ruth and Dave via Visualhunt.comOffering an All Inclusive Rate for a Drawing Course Including the MaterialThe art or painting teacher can choose a particular formula, which is to supply the material or part of the material for his painting course or internship.Let's make a point on the price of the supplies for drawing and painting:A kit of soft pastels costs from £25 to £70 according to the quality and the brandA tube of acrylic paint costs from £2 to £4.5 approximatelyA case of painting brushes costs from £4 to £40 according to the quality of the wood, the bristle (synthetic materials or not), the finish, etc.12 paper sheets Canson of 24 x 32 cm cost approximately £4.5 when10 sheets of the format big eagle of 75 x 110 cm amounts to £2.5For information purposes, a portfolio in the size of 80 x 120 cm amounts around £70 (essential for the aspiring artists). For the students who are sure to continue or who participate regularly in art workshops, it can be interesting to have their own material!Every sub-discipline in an online drawing and painting course can require a specific material. For example, for a workshop of watercolour, it's necessary to have a specific paint and adapted brushes. In any case, the minimum is to have a portfolio, a case with dry and soft lead pencils, a kneaded eraser and some sheets at least to begin. Thi s is the basis to learn the techniques of drawing and painting. It's common that a painter or illustrator has all the drawers filled with supplies or with sheets but providing everything is not suitable. Depending on the means of the art tutor, he can have more or less the material available there, this often depends on the professor drawing or painting status (student, professional, passionate, etc.).You don't lend your alcohol-based felt-tips Promaker of £25 the 12 units to anyone, in particular to the apprentice artists from 6 to 10 years old. Unless you offer a high-end course! It's up to the student to find the formula that corresponds to him, according to if he wishes to discover several techniques or to specialize in watercolour, oil paint, oil pastel, artistic collage, etc.To discover the basic drawing techniques, view the tutorial of the School of Fine Arts on this page.Take the break as a real painter when learning the painting techniques. Photo credit: Bennilover via Visua lHuntWhat are the Packages of Drawing or Painting Courses?A teacher who wishes to develop loyalty with his students can choose to propose thematic drawing or painting courses, or on demand in a group version.Rather than delivering courses in dribs and drabs, without knowing where it goes, an art tutor can be better organized. With this system, he manages more easily his employment and his money income.Another brilliant idea to justify the price of your drawing course, is to create a loyalty card. It allows you to differentiate yourself from your competitors, to give presents to the students who are loyal, and to create a sympathetic capital. Here are some ideas of rewards that you could offer to your diligent students:For 10 courses completed, the 11th at half-price, or the material given for the session, or a free course. For 20 courses bought, the 21th offered in a museum to copy a statue. With 20 courses bought, the following five with 20% discount. An workshop made, the second at ha lf-price.To gain acceptance of your prices for the drawing courses, there's nothing like good commercial techniques which will tempt your students to continue with you.Of course, think of smoothing the cost of the course offered in your basic formula so you don't have to pay of your own pocket.Moral: take out the calculator and run your thinking caps, even if you are a creative person. In some pencil strokes, the magic takes shape in a workshop of drawing. Photo via VisualhuntHow to Bundle Art Classes into PackagesAs you've seen, bundling your lessons is clearly more lucrative for you, all while providing savings for your students. However, it only makes sense that bundling is not a one size fits all proposition. For one, teaching children to draw trees and puppies with coloured pencils is less technically intense than talking a university student through the technical aspects of drawing a realistic human face or hand. And for those who want to paint or draw or otherwise create art for stress relief, their pursuit is less urgent than the A-Levels candidate who must write a paper on art history.Rule#1 for bundling: consider the motivation of your tutee. Our A-Levels student should only need you for a few weeks or months - just until exam day, after which s/he will move on to university and exposure to a higher level of art education.Still, if s/he should need further tutoring down the road, you want to be at the forefront of his/her mind, right? That is why providing a series of well thought out, targeted lessons, even at a lower price per session, will benefit you as much as your student. For such students, you may consider tutoring online; help build up their confidence by going over every part of their course curriculum so they will be completely familiar with ir.You might start with a free art session, permitting your student to draw anything s/he wants, while discussing technique. The next lesson - next week if you have time; in a few days if time is more pressi ng, you might talk about the impact of the Great Masters or aesthetics. The key to bundling such courses is to structure each lesson in keeping with the exam's structure. What if you're not tutoring test preparation? What if you teach art to a bunch of primary school students? This is a type of learner who primarily enjoys having fun, so keeping thing fresh and moving along at a relaxed pace would work best.Rule #2 for bundling: keep a lively pace and mix things up!This applies to art classes for children as well as for those who seek to learn art for pleasure. Few people want to rehash what they've already been exposed to, so designing a programme where every session brings something new will make your lessons exciting and fun; causing your students to return eagerly and ask when the next course starts! On the other hand, for those who really want to get a good, fundamental education in art, no matter what the medium, you should make your courses progressive, so that each successive le sson starts with a brief recap of the last session before building on that knowledge. You would naturally charge more for such course bundles than you would for those who are learning art as a hobby. Another good course bundle would be targeted to care centres for the elderly, or perhaps you could organise a series of lessons at your local community centre.Rule #3 for bundling: target niche groupsHere, the emphasis is less on the technical aspects of art so much as they would be on socialising and outreach. You may provide the art supplies - be they yarn or other craft materials or watercolours, and you would arrange your lessons according to the facility's schedule. The greatest benefit to you would be that such arrangements could be open-ended, meaning they would be a steady gig for you. Furthermore, as you would be working through a facility, you may charge a flat per-hour rate rather than hoping for a high turnout and collecting fees from individual participants. One important asp ect to remember in bundling courses is the flow, from one lesson to the next. For example, if you are studying watercolour landscape painting one week, your next lesson should not jump into portraits in oils.Rule #4 for bundling: maintain consistencyAlthough there is a certain freedom of expression in producing art, there should be a measure of stability, especially if your students are virtual novices to the discipline.Taking them too quickly through a subject matter they sincerely would like to absorb in depth could result in them giving you negative ratings - something you would want to avoid at all costs!Bundling your courses is a win-win scenario for you and your students! Source Pixabay Credit: PDPicsIn Summary:Setting your prices for art tuition is a lot like setting prices for math tutoring, English tutoring, college tutoring or online tutoring.Consider the age of your students and balance it against the level of expertise needed to teach them.Consider your level of experi ence with the material in question: being degreed permits you slightly higher rates than, say, an undergraduate who tutors during summer break.Consider the rates set by other art tutors in your area.No one will argue with the fact that the ability to create art, and the ability to teach others how to create art is deserving of fair compensation. The point to consider here is that your ability to teach art is only valuable to those who want to learn it!So, as you ponder what you should charge for your art classes, you should be careful to not price yourself out of the tutoring market by setting your rates either too high or too low, that last for fear that prospective students will think your lessons would have no value if they're that cheap. Thanks to this article, now you know how to set your price as an art teacher to propose private lessons of drawing or painting. In learning how to become a drawing teacher, it's necessary to take into account your level of knowledge, experience, c ertifications, the offering of the material or not, but also the request of the student-customer and his objectives. If they just come to learn to draw, it will demand you less effort than for a preparation for an entrance examination for a school of applied arts.To find tricks that will allow you to excel in your courses of drawing, keep reading our blog! You can visit for aro und £3 and also get a discount on a bottle to take back home with you.So when are you going to visit Capri? Before you go to Italy or its islands, you might want to learn some Italian. Fortunately for you, there are many talented tutors on Superprof who can help you. In terms of private Italian tutorials, there are three main types: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials.Face-to-face tutorials involve just the student and their tutor and are tailored to the former. Your tutor can work with your strengths and weaknesses and put together a programme for you. These tutorials tend to be the most costly but they're also the most cost-effective.Online tutorials are similar but you're not in the same place as your tutor. Thanks to the internet, webcams, and video conferencing, you can learn a language online. Online tutors tend to charge less than face-to-face tutors because they have fewer outgoings and expenses and can schedule more tutorials each week. Finally, gro up tutorials include groups of students learning together. If you and a group of friends, such as your travel companions, want to learn some Italian before you go, you can get group tutorials. With each student sharing the cost of the tutor's time, this type of tutorials tends to work out cheaper per person per hour.

Application Essay Tips
Application Essay Tips More than 800 colleges and universities in the United States use the Common Application, which keeps the entire application process organized. Many colleges require students to submit an essay using one of the Common Application essay prompts. For 2019-2020, there are seven prompts to choose from, one of which is to share an essay on any topic of the students choiceeven one they have written for another essay prompt. The other six essay prompts cover a range of topics: A students background, identity, interest or talent Lessons learned from obstacles, setbacks, and failures A time when a student questioned a belief or idea Problem(s) a student would like to solve (intellectual, research, ethical or other) An accomplishment, event or realization that sparked a period of personal growth A topic or idea the student finds engaging and captivating While some teens might immediately gravitate to one of these topics, others find the process of writing an essay overwhelming. Here are seven tips to help your teen approach the task methodically and create a poignant, powerful essay: Read all prompts thoroughly. We described the Common Applications 2019-2020 essay prompts briefly above, but the first thing your teen should do is read them in full and allow some time for them to simmer. Encourage your teen to have a pencil on hand in case any possible ideas pop into his head right away. Develop a schedule. The essay takes time and finesse. Remind your teen that it should not be the task that she puts off until a couple of weeks before the application is due. Encourage your teen to put together a detailed timeline that allows sufficient time for outlining, multiple first drafts, editing, getting feedback from a teacher and/or you or another family member, revising and proofreading. Too often, teens run with a topic because it is the first one for which they had a tangible idea. Many students select the choose a previous essay topic because it seems easiest. Encourage your teen to build in some brainstorming time. The point of the essay, after all, is to share a little about who your teen is and the qualities he possesses that would be valuable to the colleges to which hes applying. Put pen to paper. Or fingers to keyboard! The point is that your teen should let some ideas flow before trying to write or edit too much. Yes, an outline is important, but for many students, its easier to get a few ideas out before circling back to what they have to create a logical flow. Infuse some structure. As mentioned, an outline is important once your teen has a topic idea and a few thoughts going. Encourage your teen to plan out 1) the overarching desired takeaway 2) the hook at the beginning 3) the supporting details that articulate the values or traits about your teen he wants to share 4) the conclusion of the story that brings things full circle. Show, dont tell. Your teen has anxiety and has learned how to manage it? He should show how rather than simply say soperhaps he found peace in the yoga mat. Remind your teen that the details of the essay are what make it special and unique. Whatever he is trying to share about himself and his experience, he should do so by using specific, vivid examples vs. generalities that could sound like any other student. Re-read after setting it aside for at least a few days. That timeline your teen develops is important for several reasons, but a big one is that it allows for reflection time. Your teen needs to read a close-to-final draft of the essay with fresh eyes to check for important things like: How it flows. How readable it is. Whether it is entertaining/interesting to read. Whether it has any obvious clichs. Whether it is memorable. The college admissions essay might not make or break your teens application package, but it can certainly set your teen apart. Encourage your teen to approach it thoughtfully and give it her best effort. When shes holding a college acceptance letter in her hands, the hard work will have been worth it.
GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte - Heart Math Tutoring
GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte - Heart Math Tutoring GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte January 19, 2016 CHARLOTTE, N.C. â" Jan. 19, 2016 â" A $50,000 grant from Global Endowment Management Foundation (GEM), has helped Heart Math Tutoring (Heart) â" a nonprofit group dedicated to helping students in high-poverty concentration schools develop math skills and academic confidence â" expand its impact on social mobility in Charlotte. Through its employee-led grant cycle, the GEM Foundation provided a $50,000 grant to Heart over two years including $40,000 in December 2014 and the $10,000 in December 2015. The $40,000 grant allowed Heart to open its tutoring full program at Westerly Hills Academy in 2015/2016, serving 50 students in grades 2 â" 4. The additional $10,000 will support Westerly Hills Academyâs program site in 2016/2017. Heart is a math intervention program that recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to work as tutors in high-poverty elementary schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Hundreds of community members spend one hour each week delivering Heartâs research-based, structured curriculum. There are currently 450 volunteers signed up as weekly tutors to serve almost 400 students during the 2015/2016 school year. About 60 percent of economically disadvantaged children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools perform below grade level in math, based on 2014-2015 North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests. Heart uses research-based assessments and provides volunteer-friendly lesson plans that target the gaps of each individual student. To date, 97% of students tutored by Heart have met program growth goals set in partnership with CMS. The tutor-student relationships also boost the students academic confidence and improve the flow of social capital among races and socio-economic groups in Charlotte. Why Social Mobility in Charlotte A 2013 study by Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley shows that upward mobility for children in poverty is more difficult in Charlotte than in any of the countryâs 50 largest cities. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force was created in response to this study and area foundations are also putting a focus on social mobility. âThe GEM Foundation chose to focus on the upward mobility challenge in the Charlotte region, particularly for children and families, for the 2014-2015 grant cycle,â said Meg Morrison, associate director of Investment Operations at Global Endowment Management. âWe selected Heart Math Tutoring because the program works to improve educational achievement, a critical aspect of increasing upward mobility. Heart is a great fit for our goals because it is scalable program aimed at early childhood education, one of the primary factors affecting an individualâs long-term economic and social progress.â Heart impacts factors that contribute to social mobility â" quality of public schools, segregation and flow of social capital. Heart volunteers act as a resource for Charlotteâs public schools in addressing student academic need and are becoming a quickly growing community of public education advocates. Heart volunteer-student relationships are also often formed across lines of diversity, thus decreasing segregation and improving the flow of social capital among races and socio-economic groups. âWe have been extremely encouraged by this grant award â" our largest in support of 2015/16 schools â" particularly in its validation of Heart tutorsâ work as a lever in social mobility. Grants from community partners like Global Management Endowment allow Heart to recruit and support our dedicated volunteers, who give students the skills and confidence to succeed, in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools,â said Emily Elliott, executive director of Heart Math Tutoring. GEM Foundationâs grant, combined with almost ten employee volunteer tutors, is making a huge difference to students at Westerly Hills Academy and to our organization.â Global Endowment Management Foundation Global Endowment Management actively manages over $6 billion of client assets in the style of larger endowments and foundations. GEM Foundation is an employee led organization launched in 2013 through financial commitments from the partners of Global Endowment Management. The Foundationâs purpose is to support worthy organizations and their missions in the Charlotte region, and to provide an important learning experience for GEM team members. For more information, visit www.globalendowment.com Heart Math Tutoring Heart Math Tutoring is a Charlotte-based nonprofit with a mission to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. How to Choose an Elective Class in High School - TutorNerds
How to Choose an Elective Class in High School - TutorNerds 4 things high school students should consider when choosing an elective class Its about time for students to choose elective courses for their second semester and they should take some time to consider the best choice. Most students think about which schedule will be the easiest or which class might be more entertaining than another. However, students can also consider the specifics of a certain course and how it might benefit their future. They may even want to talk with the teacher to learn about the syllabus or the overall learning objectives in any particular course. There are lots of things to think about when it comes to picking an elective and students should consider possible career choices and college applications in addition to personal interests. 1. Discovering new subjects And the elective course is an opportunity for students to discover new things and learn about subjects that they previously didnt know about. A student may have always had an interest in creativity and art or wanted to learn better computer skills, for example. Alternatively, they may have had an interest in science and engineering or wanted to play sports. Elective courses provide the perfect opportunity for a student to discover something new without making a long-term commitment. It also lets students sample different topics over time (READ: 4 Reasons to Hire a Private Orange County Tutor Before the End of the Semester). 2. College applications Students might also consider their college applications when deciding on an elective class. For instance, if a student is thinking of majoring in engineering, they will benefit from being involved with the STEM program at school. If a student is considering a small liberal arts college, they might want to explore creative writing or a drawing and painting class. Elective classes support a studentâs decision to pursue a certain field or career opportunity in the future. 3. Personal interests For most of the school day, students dont have any choice what they will study or learn about, and this can lead to higher stress levels and a diminished love of learning in general. However, if students get to pursue their interests and hobbies as part of their elective courses, theyre more likely to enjoy a well-rounded education and be enthusiastic about mandatory courses. If a student has always loved to draw they may enjoy taking an art class for every single elective option or if they are a sports fanatic they might prefer to be involved with afterschool sports on a regular basis. Its essential for students to be able to pursue their interests and play a part in their learning, so they gain a well-rounded education and are prepared to specialize in the field of their choice once they reach college. 4. Career options Elective courses also provide students with an opportunity to explore potential career options and discover their talents. Although high school students still have a lot of time to figure out what they want to do for the next 40 years, itâs beneficial to try out a few things and gain some perspective regarding personal ability and interest. When students try a sampling of different elective courses, they will get a feel for what theyre good at and what they might need to work on. This can help them either eliminate a potential career field or start to narrow down their choices to something they are truly talented in. Students can change their mind several times or end up with multiple opportunities in different career fields. Great news, Orange County!
